A Lesson Before Dying Literary Analysis

There is a famous saying that goes, “Behind every successful man, there is an influential woman.” Women play important roles in the lives of men improving or changing their personality entirely. In the book A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines, the protagonist Grant is given the task of restoring the dignity that was stolen by the white supremacist society into his former student Jefferson. Throughout the book, all credit goes to the women for Grant’s noticeable change in his perspective about life. Although the female characters are portrayed with a secondary status in the book, they have a substantial contribution towards Grant’s, progressive prosperity as a person. How Miss Emma asks Grant to help make Jefferson into a man, the way Vivian supports Grant make the right decisions in his life, and how Tante Lou guides him by asserting her commands, carves Grant into a person with a more positive outlook on life. She is also a major beacon in his life; the beacon of hope and strength. “‘One day I’ll bring flowers to the graveyard,’ she said” (209). She is mad at Grant because he didn't go away and got into a fight. She is scared that these rash actions may result in losing him. She loves him and she doesn’t want to think about losing him at all. She acts as a reality check for him for him.
