In the novel, A Long Way Gone, Ishmael Beah is not guilty of murder because he was forced to kill people while serving the army for survival. Ishmael and his friends ran away from the attack in their village, they went through the forest to savage for food and to hide from the rebels. He was found and recruited by the army at age 13 to fight against the rebels for the violence they’ve committed on many villagers, including their family. Many events that Ishmael had experienced during the war changed his mind set on other people around him, every stranger he encountered became an enemy to him.
