The first few moments you delve into reading a story, it will become apparent the time it was set in. It might not come at you with full force, this may depend on how it is written or how long you fully grasp what is transpiring, but once you begin to form how it flows in your mind, you may already have an estimation of the period in which it took place. A story’s central message may be connected to the year, or era, the author wrote it. John Updike’s “A & P” tells the account of Sammy, a nineteen year old working in a grocery store. We are put inside Sammy’s brain as it is in his point of view wherein the whole story recounts his experience when three girls clad in bikinis caught his attention, as do everyone present in the store in fact since “A & P” revolves around his narration once these girls …show more content…
From first glance, he regarded them as quite attractive, most especially Queenie who stood out and seemed to be the leader of the bunch. But as he observed them for an extended period of time, noticing the air they seemingly give off, Sammy started to form less than pleasant judgements about the girls. “Do you really think it's a mind in there or just a little buzz like a bee in a glass jar?” as written in the story. But his interest in them grows and a fascination for this unexpected event set off something in him. Once the three girls reach the checkout counter Sammy was stationed in, the manager, Lengel, chastised the girls for their choice of outfits. Clearly, they were embarrassed to be reprimanded in such a way. However, Sammy doesn’t approve of Lengel’s actions, and once the girls leave the store he tells Lengel “I quit.” Through this brief encounter with these girls he made such a sudden decision. “A sign of the times” can be linked to the story as it shows Sammy breaking out of this conformism during the year the author published the
