"A Rose for Emily" Compare and Contrast Miss Emily Grierson kept her life a mystery and she was perceived by others as a mystery also. Emily was often a subject for gossip since she always kept her life private. For many years people only saw her through a window, and this caused many questions to arouse. She remained hidden, and she was seen as a mysterious figure. Because she kept her private life a secret, people made assumption about her. Nobody really came to know her. She is described as dry and cold, as a disgrace and bad example for young people. Miss Grierson would not listen to anyone, she was very stubborn. An example of her stubbornness is when they kept sending her letters and she would not answer them. When they tried to charge her, she refused. Saying "See Colonel Sartoris, I have no taxes in Jefferson." Miss Grierson used her house as a shield, she used this shield to protect her life and herself. Inside her house many secrets are kept. We know this because at the beginning when William Faulkner is describing her death, he says women went into the house out of curiosity to see the inside of the house.
