The Benefits of Abortion Women assume freedom with regards to reproductive choices base on her knowledge and belief. However, “abortion is the most degrading inhuman act for it destroys human life before birth” (Waema, 2008, p.22). Yet according to Biggs, Gould, and Foster (2013), “women are motivated to seek abortion for a wide range of reasons that are driven by unique circumstances and stage of life” (p. 12). Women should consider abortion as a medical option because it sustains women’s psychological well-being, protects women’s physical health and ensures women’s autonomy. Abortion sustains women’s psychological well-being. Abortion eliminates women’s anxiety from mistimed pregnancies. “Most women view unwanted pregnancy as a stressful personal situation limiting one’s sense of self control” (Coleman, Reardon, Strahan & Cougle, 2008, p. 245). Abortion in congenitally defective fetus takes away chances of future painful experience to mothers. “Continuing pregnancy with diagnosed abnormal fetus, expects a child will not survive or with potentially low quality of life conveys hopelessness to mothers” (Ballantyne, Newson, Luna, & Ashcroft, 2009, p. 52). Adolescent women contribute to the most number of domestic violence related to pregnancies. “Abortion among adolescent mothers reduces the risk of intimate partner violence and relationship problems” (Fergusson, Boden, & Horwood, 2009, p. 7). Psychological trauma caused by continuing futile pregnancies are avoided. “Forcing women to continue pregnancy in unacceptable circumstances exacerbate what can already be a sad and agonising process delaying the point of closure” (Ballantyne et al., 2009, p. 52). Women who had an abortion experience personal growth. “Women having had abortion was associated to high self- esteem” (Coleman et al., 2009, p. 239). Abortion among victims of rape showed positive self- acceptance. “An average of eighteen months after an abortion, 46% reported an increase outlook in life and personal growth” (Ballantyne et al., 2009, p. 54). Abortion from an incest, women regained a positive perspective in life. “A high frequency of suicidal ideation who experienced sexual abuse from immediate relatives that induced pregnancy reduces significantly after abortion” (Coleman et al., 2009, p. 238). Moreover, abortion protects women’s physical health. Terminating pregnancy as early as first trimester protects women from more physical pain. “Given the late gestation with many abnormalities diagnosed, continuing pregnancy often need to go through full vaginal labor which possess more danger” (Ballantyne et al., 2009, p. 54). Abortion among women with an organ disorder has alleviated threats to life of continuing pregnancy. “Special considerations have been laid in women with pre-existing cardiac disease to undergo medical termination of pregnancy in view of maternal or fetal well-being” (Shrestha et al., 2011, p. 23). Adverse pregnancy outcomes on women with existing disease condition is prevented upon early abortion. “Post-partum hemorrhage,… and pre-eclampsia encompass type 2 diabetes among pregnant women” (Dunne, Brydon, Smith & Gee, 2008, p. 736). Abortion interrupts to life threats imposed by mother’s incapability to continue pregnancy. “Early abortion is a better option than putting self to miscarriage process because it results in infertility, extensive pain, hemorrhage to shock” (Shrestha et al., 2011, p. 21). Abortion reduce risk of dying prior to a health condition during pregnancy.
