Colles’ fracture: Colles’ fractures are very common extra-articular fractures of the distal radius that occur as the result of a fall onto outstretched hands. They consist of as a linear transverse fracture of the distal radius approximately 1 inch proximal to the articular surface with dorsal angulation of the distal fragment. The Colles’ fracture is one of the most common and challenging of the outpatient fractures. This fracture was first described in 1814 by an Irish surgeon and anatomist, Abraham Colles -- hence the name "Colles" fracture. The plain radiograph film often comprises an AP and a lateral view; however, it is not uncommon for an oblique view to be included.
