Adlerian theory “recognizes and stresses the effect of social class, racism, sex, and gender on the behavior of individuals,” (Corey, 2013) which is a multicultural approach that is appropriate when counseling clients of diverse backgrounds. Again, this theory focuses on wellness not pathology and places emphasis on one’s ability to shape and define their own goals, while addressing “social equality issues and social embeddedness of humans.” (Corey, 2013)
It is a fact that “race, ethnicity, and culture are powerful variables in influencing how people think, make decisions, behave, and define events, and [may] also affect how different groups define a helping relationship.” (Fraga, Atkinson, & Wampold, 2002; D. W. Sue, 2001). An aspect of Adlerian theory that may not be useful when counseling clients from diverse backgrounds is that the locus of change is focused on self. Those from diverse backgrounds may be unable to directly affect changes in their life due to outside factors such as racism, prejudice, etc. Additionally, some cultures are uncomfortable about expressing problems or experiences from childhood, and Adlerian theory places emphasis on a client’s early memories.
