From the perspective of a young person with no parental role model and no apparent education or career plans, there may be a consideration of joining a gang. However, before joining a gang, it is important to look at all the advantages and disadvantages. An individual might join a gang because they lack stability and belonging in their life. But by joining a gang, they receive a sense of belonging in addition to protection. Although these benefits may seem like a great deal, it is important to look at the costs of what gang activities will do to the individual, such as becoming a possession of the gang and developing psychopathic traits. There can be many possible reasons for joining a gang. One possible reason could be because of the lack of stability and belonging. If the young person feels like they have no future, they might think that joining a gang would give them a sense of purpose. Being a part of a gang will give them plans for the future. Going along with that, an individual who joins a gang might not be financially stable. By joining the gang, the individual hopes to find stability that is lacking from their current life. Especially if they have no parental role model that is taking care of them and have no other means of getting money and surviving, they might turn …show more content…
For one, being a part of a gang gives a young person a sense of family and belonging. Especially for an individual that has no parental role model in their life and nothing else going for them, a gang can become their new family. Gang membership can also mean that the individual has protection. Because gang members are considered family and want to protect those who belong to their gang, the individual might feel safe from potential harm that come from being a part of a gang.
