Racial tension has existed for a long time in America. Going all the way back to the early 1800’s with slavery. Then to the civil war being started all because of slavery. In 1963 the civil rights movement started and that is about the time the African American people in the United States started to get the equality that they deserved. The African American community within the 1920’s would see great improvement on nationalism in the black community and Marcus Garvey’s leadership in the UNIA would help America see an improvement on colored peoples rights. They broke down the proponents of emigration and a sovereign state. They were assuming that certain inherent values, abilities, and temperaments would provide the culture and social cohesion necessary to mold a new and just nation for black people (Banks 478). They had the abilities and values that they wanted planned out. Frederick Douglass helped try and stop nationalism by “conceding the needs for blacks to act collectively and aggressively against racial oppressions but he held forth for racial justice on American soil” (Banks 477). This means he wanted to show the blacks how to act against racial oppressions without acting as they are going to harm themselves or others. The UNIA also known as the Universal Negro Improvement Association. Founded by Marcus Garvey in 1914 it started in Jamaica, Kingston, and the West Indies it then migrated to the United States in 1916. The African repatriation and resettlement scheme in Liberia, has a constitution and many laws, that the UNIA tried to function as a sort of provisional government of Africa (Hill 2230). The African American people felt as if they were never gonna get anywhere with the people here in america so they felt as if they had to come up with a plan and a stable way to be able to live back in Africa. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People also known as NAACP was founded because of a violent race riot in 1908. The NAACP came together in springfield Illinois, “William Walling was a white labor activist and socialist” (Hill 1580). Walling thought that it would be a good idea to invoke the spirits of Elijah Lovejoy and Abraham Lincoln to come to the assistance of blacks and help fight for racial equality.
