The message behind this poem is clear. Langston Hughes is saying that you always want to hold onto your dreams and try to accomplish them. Holding onto your dreams you can improve, succeed, and make remarkable accomplishments. If you don't end up holding onto your dreams, you'll be stuck. Even though African Americans were slaves in the South and they moved to the North, they got more freedom but still weren't treated equally and fairly as the white people did. African Americans couldn't live on an all white neighborhood, couldn't vote, and couldn't go to an all white school. They were brought down because of the color of their skin.
