Alka Seltzer is common antacid taken to alleviate an upset stomach. It is a combination of sodium bicarbonate, citric acid, and calcium hydrogen phosphate. These substances produce a medicine that can neutralize stomach acid. Alka Seltzer is known to fizz, a reaction that is produced when carbon dioxide gas is released when the tablet is dissolved.
The purpose of this lab was to determine the mass of sodium bicarbonate, Na3HCO3, in a tablet of Alka Seltzer by massing and dissolving fragments of the tablet in 6M HCL. A hypothesis was that the actual concentration of Na3HCO3 in the Alka Seltzer tablet is less than the label lists.
