Amelia Earhart Amelia Earhart once said “Women must try to do things as men have tried, when they fail, their failure must be but a challenge to others.” Born in Atchison, Kansas on July 24, 1897, Amelia saw her first plane at a state fair when she was only ten years old. During World War 1 Amelia became a nurse’s aide in Toronto and helped wounded soldiers. Frank Hawks gave Amelia her first ride in a plane. Her nickname was given to her by Kinner Airster and her nickname was “The Canary”. January 3rd, 1921 was when Amelia took her first flying lesson.
