Amelia Earhart Amelia Earhart once said “Women must try to do things as men have tried, when they fail, their failure must be but a challenge to others.” Born in Atchison, Kansas on July 24, 1897, Amelia saw her first plane at a state fair when she was only ten years old. During World War 1 Amelia became a nurse’s aide in Toronto and helped wounded soldiers. Frank Hawks gave Amelia her first ride in a plane. Her nickname was given to her by Kinner Airster and her nickname was “The Canary”. January 3rd, 1921 was when Amelia took her first flying lesson. She proved that a woman can do anything when she puts her mind to it. At first when Amelia saw an airplane she wasn’t impressed with “a thingy of rusty wire and wood” in her words. In 1908
