Did the presidency of Tyler and the election of Polk in 1844 bring the US together or did it intensify sectional tensions? Justify your response with at least 2 examples other than Texas and California. (363-368)
The presidency and the election sectionalized America more than it brought it together. Tyler signed the Tariff of 1842 which was smart because the government needed revenue. The Aroostook War began when Britain wanted to build a road through the disputed Maine Territory. This was compromised by Daniel Webster which moved the road into the Canadian territory. In 1837 an American ship Caroline was sunk by a British ship, and in 1841 the British stationed in the Bahamas proposed asylum to slaves that had rebelled and taken Creole,

His plan was to steal guns and arm slaves, thus allowing them to rise up against their masters and gain their freedom. However due to his poor commanding skills the raid was a fail and many of the people died. He was captured and sentenced to death but became a martyr to abolitionists. William Lloyd Garrison was a major abolitionist but not only did he own the Liberator, an anti-slavery newspaper, he also took a copy of the Constitution and burned it in public. His greatest achievement would be the newspaper where he expressed his thoughts and feelings that enlightened other abolitionists. He also debunked many other abolitionists if they resulted to advocating for violence, or other things he thought unnecessary, such as David Walker. Frederick Douglass was a huge abolitionist because not only did he lecture for abolitionism, but he was very active in politics, which was uncommon especially for black men. In addition he published an autobiography named The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass which gave many insights to slavery and the social injustices of the time. Sojourner Truth was among very few black abolitionist Woman. Her greatest accomplishments were the freeing of black woman from slavery and her speech Ain't I a Woman which promoted Women's rights, abolition, and
