I’ve decided to examine Thomas Paine’s Common Sense. Common Sense, published January 10, 1776, was Paine’s main work. The pamphlet called for American independence, and inspired Americans to break away from Britain in 1776. Paine began by distinguishing between government and society. Society is everything constructive and good, while government is evil at its best. Government’s sole purpose was to protect its people. Paine believed that society as a whole would be happier if they had a part in the creation of laws.
