Film can be used artistically, industrially, and culturally. Escape from the Planet of the Apes can be viewed as an artistic form to start a conversation about how ignorant people can be when it comes to differences in belief systems. Rashomon had more of a story to be told aspect and it created an interesting art aspect about it that made the viewer think about how differently people could recall the same event.
