A man drifting in a life raft for 47 days with only rain water to drink and food he and another castaway could procure, survive to only be captured and put in several dehumanizing, unsanitary ,Japanese prison camps where he was constantly mentally and physically degraded for 2 years to be released, forgive his captors and live to the ripe age of 97. Who is this man? It is no other than Louis Zamperini. Louis Silvie Zamperini was born January 26th 1917, in Olean, New York to Louise Dossi and Anthony Zamperini. In his early years Louis was always in trouble, from fighting to smoking and drinking. Louis’ brother Pete took Louis into running, Louis went into intense training giving up drinking and smoking, he later would move on to set multiple records and go to the Olympics. In November 1941 he joined the Army Air Corps, he went on a search mission and crashed into the ocean he then was castaway for 47 days to then be captured and put in a POW camp by the Japanese. In laura Hillenbrand’s “Unbroken” we see the terrible things Louis was exposed to hard labor, little food, beatings, and emotional torture. Louis was treated as if he were invisible, but Louis resisted invisibility and two of the traits he had that aided in his goal of remaining visible were defiance and thievery.

Defiance is Louis’ second trait and yet again Louis shows this trait in his early years being defiant towards teachers and authority figures. At any rate the first example is on page 141 while being interrogated by Japanese soldiers they ask him about e model aircraft.“What do you know about the E-Model? Nothing...It was a lie…” This is an example of Louis defiance because he lies to people to stay in control, he knows that he is playing dangerously because if caught lying he wouldn't get any food from the
