Have you ever been to the doctor and was prescribed medicine to take? Well, the medicine that you were taking was most likely tested on animals before it was given to you. Animal testing is a way for scientist to learn about the side effects that a drug will cause to humans if it is used. Animal testing began around the early 1860s, but did not gain popularity until the 1900s. Opposers think animal testing is inhumane According to the Salem Press Encyclopedia,” A chief moral concern raised in regard to animal testing is the pain and suffering it involves.” When animals are given these drugs for experimentation, they are not given medicine to relieve them of their pain. Some of the animals go as far as breaking their own backs because of the amount of excruciating pain they are in. The animals that are victims of animal testing are exposed to diseases and often starved to death. The animals are packed tightly in a small cage with hundreds of other animals. There is not enough space for the animals to move around freely. The animals do not get to spend a lot of time with their parents, by the time the animals are born they are ripped away from them. Most of them are born just for lab experimentation. Animals are put through so much pain all for human benefits (Delzer 29). Sometimes people are unaware of the things that they can do personally to boycott animal testing. There are several charities available that help take in animals that are from labs. When scientists are done with the animals, they are usually labeled as useless and killed. Donating to these charities can help stop it. When shopping people can buy products that are not tested on animals
