The archetypes lurking in the shadows In the work of literature a story undergoes multiple quests as did Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. In the story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the characters dramatically demonstrate how a single character can play many archetypal roles. The hero of this story as well as many other stories begin with “the call to adventure” where the hero begins his journey leaving the community to face conflicts that arose from the threat that involved his community. (Cambell 59) Colors and symbols are an important function in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight because they represent various meanings and ideals within the story. The Green Knight aids in the development of Sir Gawain in the form as a mentor.
