Our parents and culture make up our identity. For many years, learning is passed down our history by our parents and relatives. In the stories, “Arm Wrestling With My Father,” by Brad Manning and “Looking For Work” by Gary Soto share relationships where they are unable to find themselves. In Manning’s life, he explains a time when he and his father had not showed affections with each other, however, changed over time. Also, Soto shares a story of himself when he was young and wanted to imitate families who were rich and wealthy. Both authors demonstrate how parents and culture, influenced them never to give up, become a hard worker, and to be grateful for what I have. Furthermore, I can relate to Manning and Soto because of the life I live, and how our parents and culture make upour identity.
A trait that our culture and parents have taught us is that we should never give up. This ideal can be depicted in Brad Manning “Arm Wrestling With My Father” when he was young and describes how his father had a hard time showing affection towards each other, however, never …show more content…
They told me I was lucky to have an opportunity to get an education since my parents had to give up theirs to work at an early age. My parents also influenced me never to give up. My parents helped and supported me my whole life. I connect with Manning in which our parents have a hard time to commuting with us. My mother would be too busy working to become where we are today and to provide us the necessities we need to survive in life. After graduating high school, I had seen my mom cry as I walk down the stage with my diploma. I came to her realizing she had supported me the whole time even if I had made bad choices like not spending enough time with her. As I grew up, I was thankful for what my family has given and done for me and how times have changed, I now have responsibilities to help them
