Militarism was strong leading up to World War I, and the Arms Race is a clear example of this. Britain had plans to build many Dreadnoughts in response to Germany, feeling threatened by its progress (Source D). However, this could be ridiculed as both nations were potentially over-reacting to one another (Source B), and governments were determined to finance this façade (Source H). Britain did have 29 Dreadnoughts, with Germany having 17 in 1914 (Source F). In addition to the naval fortification, there was also competition to increase the size and strength of the armies of the respective European nations (Source G), with Germany having over 2 million men and Britain having 122 warships and 64 submarines.
