Baseball is known as America’s favorite pastime. The Major League Baseball National League is also the oldest professional sports league. It has created many legends that are so well known today such as Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, and Willie Mays. Even with such a history, the sport is dying. After the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, it was removed along with its counterpart, softball. Today, the sports are fighting for their rightful place back into the Olympics against karate, skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing. Baseball/softball should be re-entered into the games due to their popularity across the world and their past involvement in the Olympic Games. Baseball/softball are not just sports; to some, they are a lifestyle. Little kids memorize every statistic of every player on their favourite major league team, hoping one day that will be them. It has the most support from people all over the world. On Twitter, the hashtags #softball, #baseball, and #Tokyo2020 began to trend worldwide at the announcement of potential having the sport back. Everyone from past Olympians such as Jennie Finch, a two time Olympian and a gold medalist pitcher for Team USA, and baseball/softball lovers voiced their excitement on the social media website (Twitter).
In the end, the final decision is up to the International Olympic Committee. Organizers say, “The final decision, in line with the Olympic Charter, will be made by the IOC at the 129th IOC Session in Rio in August 2016” (“Eighteen” 2). There is still a great deal of time left to campaign for baseball/softball to be re entered. Social media is the best way to voice support for baseball/softball to re enter the Olympics.
