The Battle of Newport, Rhode Island is documented to have occurred on August 29th 1778, but the preparation and decision for the attack on Newport came from the failure of the Americans to take back New York City. General Washington was attempting to put himself and the Americans in position to take New York City back from the British with the help of the French Navy under the command of Vice Admiral Count d’Estaing.1 After the Vice Admiral d’Estaing notified General Washington that he was unable to pass New York’s shallow channels and effectively establish a blockade against the British, they both then identified a new target and that would be Newport, which garrisoned by 6700 men.2 D’Estaing immediately moved to the area and eliminated the weak British naval presence in and around Newport, Rhode Island and isolated the British soldiers from any naval support.3 The British garrison at Newport was commanded by Major General Sir Robert …show more content…
