Becoming A Successful EMT

I believe that it takes a vast range of different qualities to be a successful EMT.
First, an EMT needs to be adaptable. When dealing with a medical emergency, you can’t predict what you will face when you answer a call. You need to be able to adapt to any situation, and to be reasonably collected under pressure. While on a much smaller scale, over my 2 years at Nashoba, I have already had to be very adaptable to be more successful. Last year, I underwent great personal stress because of a death in the family, which highlighted the fact that I was overloading myself with my classes and my grades began to drop. Training to become an EMT is incredibly rigorous and difficult, but a true love for what you’re learning will make up for this tenfold. While desire alone is not enough to succeed, an EMT cannot be successful without a love for medicine. I’ve known since my Freshman year that all of my strengths, interests, and goals intersect perfectly for me to become a doctor. I always loved medicine and biology as a child, and I remember watching medical documentaries when I was just 6 or 7 years old. Somehow, I had never considered pursuing a career in medicine. However, the more I think about pursuing healthcare, the more excited I become. I cannot picture a future in which I do not become an EMT and then a doctor, so this only pushes me to make this become a reality. Ultimately, I believe that success is determined by passion and determination. It’s common sense that “hard work wins when talent doesn’t work hard”, so it only makes sense that how hard we work relies on how badly we want to succeed. For a while, I simply did not know that Nashoba had an EMT program. However, the moment that I found out about it, I determined not to let such an amazing opportunity go to waste. Being on the younger side of my grade, I was devastated when I couldn’t apply last year. However, I am beyond grateful and excited to get even one opportunity to apply for this program.
As somebody who would love to become an Emergency Medicine doctor in the future, I know that I want to pursue becoming an EMT beforehand. So much goes into our healthcare system, and yet, so little of it is recognized. Doctors and Nurses would have no patients if it weren’t for the EMT’s and paramedics that aid them first.
