The young husband and wife fill out the school application form together: 05/01/1994, male, American Citizen, Christian… etc. They send the completed form to the school that has the best bilingual education programs. Both parent know that their child will be better off in the academic world. They could outperform children who speak only one language. You do not think so? Well, According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are at least sixteen different languages commonly spoken in the United States. Among these languages, Spanish and Chinese are the top non-English languages spoken in the United States. In modern society, being able to speak more than one language could help you a lot in the workplace. According the Pew Hispanic Center, a project of the Pew Research Center, there were estimated 40.4 million immigrants in the United States in 2011 and this number has increased significantly over the past few years. With the population of immigrants continually growing, the bilingual workforce will only expand. In addition, according to the Labor Department, by 2020, Latinos are expected to make up 19% of the U.S workforce. Bilingual workers have been in demand in education and sales since the 19th century. People who can speak or communicate with two or more languages are very attractive to employers. That is because speaking more than one languages allows you to do your job more efficiently. More importantly, you can help a larger group of customers. For example, if you work as a bank teller, you have to be able to handle monetary transactions for customers and you have to able to explain their financial options, so it is clear to see that it is a big advantage to be able to communicate effectively with multiple languages.
