Orange Is The New Black, by Piper Kerman, is a memoir about Pipers real life experience in prison. Piper is a good girl who does not belong in prison, as she says many times throughout her book. After sh graduated college, she got in it’s the wrong people. She got a girlfriend who worked in drug distribution, and eventually got drawn in by the mount of money she could be making. Fast forward several years and Piper has left her girlfriend and the drugs behind, and now has a serious boyfriend, Larry. They fall deeply in love and everything is perfect. Her life seems to be normal and then she finds out that she was betrayed by her ex, who turned Piper in to save herself. Piper is scared to tell Larry about her past, but he promise to stay by her side through all of this. After a long waiting period for her court date, she pleads guilty and has to serve 15 months in Danbury prison in Danbury, Connecticut. It must have been extremely surprising to her parents that she was involved in crime, as she was born into a family of successful doctors and lawyers. She attended Smith College and graduated in 1992. After she graduated, she fell in love with Catherine Wolters (Norma in her book) and that’s when she became involved in the drug trade. Just as it says in her book, several years later she was stabbed in the back by her ex, and had to serve her sentence in Danbury prison. She only served 13 of her 15 month sentence.
