Brigham Young was an strong religious leader in the Latter Day Saint movement as well as an early settler of the Western United States. When Brigham Young was born, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints did not exist and although Young was not born into a Mormon family, he is most remembered and revered for demonstrating the iconic actions resembling that of a more modernized prophet who led the Mormons west. He was the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by 1847 until his death in 1877 where in his role as emigration leader, leader of the LDS church, as well as Utah Territorial governor, Brigham Young displayed a great affect on the shaping of Utah’s religious future and it’s added diversity in faith. At first he chose the Salt Lake valley for the first site of Mormon settlement. He influenced other individuals to settle specific territories that he chose, and in a few cases gave them tasks to do on this land, such as growing cotton or food crops. He influenced the basic layout of certain districts as well as how the settlers acted and thought. However despite all his honorable deeds, he partook in many controversial practices including polygamy and regarding black people and the Priesthood
