In James Hurst’s “The Scarlet Ibis,” the narrator, called Brother, has a disputable hand in the death of his younger brother, Doodle. Reasons that conclude Brother is responsible for Doodle’s death is his general antagonism towards Doodle and his weakness, his “pride” that leads him to do things for his betterment, not Doodle’s, and when he left Doodle behind in the storm, knowing that he had tired Doodle out by making him row against the current that afternoon.
