Can Comedy Break Stereotypes Analysis

Alexie Sherman once said “Don’t live up to your stereotypes” (Sherman). If you live up to your stereotypes you will become someone you really were not in the first place. Stereotypes have various affects on our society; they cause people to believe that they are someone who they aren’t. According to Maz Jobrani’s TED talk “Can Comedy Break Stereotypes”, a stereotype is a judgement that causes people to believe bad things about themselves. He says, “For the most part, when you see us in the major media, you know, it's some evil dude with a beard and that ominous music (Jobrani).” This relates to stereotype because all Muslims are not terrorist most of them are actually nice people. This effects society because the in movies, they make muslims out to be the bad guys when in reality most of them are not. Furthermore, why do they image all Iranian’s to be the same? The speaker quotes in her poem that “grouping folks together is an individual waste” (Holbrook). She means that putting labels on people isn’t worth the time because it may not be who they actually are; however, this relates to our society because you see many people getting labels put on them by other people when the other people don’t really know who the person that they are stereotyping is. The speaker says in they poem that she’s a “chunk-style vegetable soup”(Holbrook). I believe that she is trying to say that she is made of many things and that you shouldn’t put labels on other people unless you know who they really are. The speaker relates this to the real world because you see people stereotyping other people that they don’t know all the time: by writing this poem Holbrook is showing how she wants people to stop putting labels on other people and actually figure out who they are
