For this assignment, I chose to read and study “A Distinctly Human Quest: The Demise of Vitalism and the Search for Life’s Origins.” Stanley Miller and his professor Harold Urey believed that some basic chemicals were on the earth before life had even begun. Those chemicals were methane, water, hydrogen, and ammonia. Scientists Alexander Oparin and J.B.S Haldane had already proposed this idea, but were unable to properly test it. They and Urey thought that the hypothesis could be tested in the future. That is when Stanley Miller, a graduate student, thought of an idea to test the hypothesis. “Stanley Miller thought he could devise an experiment which would synthesize ideas in science.” Miller made a device that could contain the four gases
