Is race related to employment termination?
Hypothesis 1- Race will be related to termination. Specifically, African-American employees will be more likely to be terminated than Caucasian employees.
Hypothesis 2- Termination will be robustly tied to level of education, and including education will eliminate the relationship between race and termination.
Procedure(s):
• The data used in this study were collected as part of a larger project designed to assess the validity and reliability of a selection system being utilized by a large hotel chain operating within the United States. Specifically, managers were asked to indicate the employee's education, age, sex (1 = male, 2 = female), previous hospitality experience (categorical answer of yes/no) and race (Caucasian, African-American, Hispanic, Asian, American Indian, Other). o Work-related information: General information about each employee was also gathered from the management staff. For example, data about tbe type of job the participant held - and whether this position required more contact with hotel guests (front of house - 1) versus more behind the scene service work (back of house = 2), the reason for separation (seasonal, employee initiated, or employer initiated), and the number of commendations in the past six months.
Summary of findings: Education and race were negatively correlated, meaning, African-Americans tend to be less educated than Caucasian; this suggests that level of education, race, sex, and age are related to termination (hypothesis 2 was supported). Supporting the hypothesis, a significant correlation was found between race and termination (African-American employees were more likely to be terminated than Caucasian
