When Missouri applied to be in the Union as a state in 1819, slavery was established there, but a representative from New York proposed it would be a free state. At that time, free and slave states were divided equally throughout the Union but with the admission of Maine at the same time as Missouri as also a free states it would make the union unbalanced. As a compromise Senator Jesse B. Thomas proposed the prohibition of slavery in the rest of the Louisiana Purchase territory north of the Southern boundary in Missouri. That was adapted by the senate and became known as the Missouri Compromise. A cause would be the unbalanced admission of both Maine and Missouri as free states. As a result southerners were extremely unhappy with the unbalance that they thought of it as a danger, until Jesse B. Thomas proposed the Missouri compromise.
