The novel Bless Me Ultima is about a young boy named Tony who, with the help of his honorary grandmother and Curandera Ultima, discovers who he is and where his heart lies. In the rising action leading up to the eventual climax, the protagonist witnesses many tragic and miraculous events that make him question the world in which he lived. However, the major turning point in the story is when Cico introduced him to the mysterious golden carp. Expected to become a priest, it astounded Tony more than anyone when he began to favor the religion of the golden carp over the more widely accepted prospect.
