Have you ever wondered what is going on in the projects during the day. Most people probably don’t but if you do it is a lot different than most people’s lives. In the projects there are gangs, drugs, alcohol and much more. In the novel If I Grow Up by Todd Strasser, DeShawn wants to escape the projects and support his family without joining a gang. The older DeShawn the harder it is to support his family. DeShawn had the choice of joining a gang or not because Lightbulb got a job, Officer Patterson tried helping, and he could have kept going to school but he didn’t want to.
