In the book, Anthem it is about a man known as Equality 7-2521 who we follow throughout the story. Equality 7-2521 lives in a society that believes all men should act as one unit, and they shouldn’t have any thoughts of their own. Equality 7-2521 ends up breaking all of the laws created by the Council. By Equality 7-2521 breaking the laws it causes him to be labeled as damned. In Equality 7-2521 society, any action that is made alone is wrong and evil. Their society; is known as collectivism while our current society is known as individualism. There are many differences between the two societies. In the following paragraphs, I will talk about the differences between the two societies. In an individualistic society, people are able to think on their own without being punished. They also make their own choices, which is the opposite of the collectivist society. Everything that you do has to be with another man, and never alone. You are not allowed to take credit for anything that you discover. Because they would consider anything that is done alone is evil and must be wrong. If you do claim that you did it alone you will be lashed many times or burned alive. While in an individualism society you are able to take credit for the things you do, and you are encouraged to try and discover new things. The collectivist society uses the words like we and they, to show that whatever one person accomplishes is not done by him alone. Individualistic societies use words like I and me, to show that they did something without others and by themselves.
