Today, the Mirabal sisters are honored and recognized as heroines in the Dominican Republic and in parts of the world. They are symbols of courage, love, and sacrifice. Minerva Mirabal was one of my favorite of all the sisters. She was hard-headed and she fought for what she believes in. She was really the leader of the family, and they really followed her until they were beaten to death. Minerva probably had the most responsibility, and that’s what really drew me towards her. Minerva always thought she was stuck like she was in a cage. “ Sometimes, watching the rabbits in their pens, I’d think, I’m no different from you, poor things.’’ She wanted to go to law school, and get out from under Trujillo’s power. Minerva fought for
