“Love people for who they are, instead of what they are not.” In the short story, Flowers for Algernon the main character Charlie Gordon has disabilities. Every day, Charlie lives his life being made fun of and never knowing it. He is applied for a surgery designed to boost his intelligence. The neurosurgery is a big risk because it has never been tested on a human. Charlie ends up going through with the surgery and becomes very smart. He learns more than the average person his age, over a short period of time. He becomes a genius for a couple of months, but then he slowly starts to become dumb again. He ends up with the same intelligence that he had before he had the surgery. Charlie is better off after the surgery because he got to feel what it is like to be smart, have real friends, and he got to understand when people were taking advantage of him. …show more content…
Charlie always said how other people were so smart and how he wanted to be smart like them. When he got the surgery he got to experience it. In the first paragraph, it says, “Miss Kinnian says maybe they can make me smart. I want to be smart.” Charlie got the surgery and go to become smart, so he got to live his dream for a short period of time. In the text, it states, “Thats why Im gonna keep trying to get smart so I can have that feeling agen. Its a good feeling to know things and be smart.” After the surgery, Charlie enjoyed feeling of being smart, even though he lost the feeling he still got to have the closure of what it would feel like.
