Apache Indians

The Apache Indians lived in Alaska, Canada, and the Southwest of America. But moved to the South region of the United States and divided into two different regions, the Rio Grande serving as the division of the regions. The Apache Indians were typically a nomadic tribe, so they never exactly settled in one place. Being nomadic, they followed the buffalo and relied on them to live.

Shelter
Apache Indians lived in shelters called wickiups, which were built out of wooden frames with buffalo hide and brush. They were all about the size of a modern tent and could be constructed in two hours, if there was enough material around. Wickiups were a more permanent home than the tipi. Wickiups were dome shaped, while the tipis were cones. Typically, tipis were more spacious and easier to heat than wickiups. But both were small and cozy.

But in the 1800’s, men started wearing cotton tunics and pants. Women wore calico skirts and dresses, which were adopted from the Mexicans. Dresses and some shirts were decorated with fringed designs and beads. Ceremonious clothing included wooden headdresses and masks. Both men and women wore jewelry, like necklaces and chokers. Face paint was also commonly used. They had different designs for war, religious ceremonies, and festive decor.

Food
The Apache’s life revolved around the buffalo, it’s one of the primary foods eaten by them. But they also hunted deer, antelope, and small game like rabbits. Berries, nuts, seeds, and other plants were also harvested for additional food. Corn was eaten, by trading with the Pueblo, because the Apache didn’t farm. Another traditional food eaten was roasted agave, which was roasted in a pit for several days. But both fish and bear were not eaten, because they considered unclean to eat.
