Chesapeake colonies were composed of Virginia- with Jamestown which was established in 1607 and Maryland. Each of these colonies had same agricultural development based on tobacco, cotton, and indigo. The main question we have is: what was the source of labor to Chesapeake colonies and how did it affect the society?
As noted in the introduction many of Chesapeake were farmers, and they needed work to their firms. During 17th century the tobacco faming was growing so rapidly and it required a lot of labor. At first Chesapeake hired indentured servants from England who were compost of men and women and they sold their work for five to seven years in exchange for passage to American colonies to harvest tobacco crops.
