A difficult childhood can be described as one of the most traumatic experiences anyone can go through in life. A hard childhood at home is very depressing. An example of a difficult childhood is the upbringing of Adeline Yen Mah. The memoir, Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah, shows how hard an upbringing can get and that subject may sometimes be depressing. She does this through the perspective of herself, Adeline Yen Mah.
In many examples, Adeline has a very depressing life, one of the examples is losing PLT. When Niang said that Adeline was looking uglier and uglier as Adeline aged, showed her “true colors”. “Niang turned to Father, and said in a loud register, that I was looking uglier and uglier as I grew older and taller”(Page 187). Calling anyone ugly is low, calling someone in your family ugly is even lower, but calling someone in your family ugly while at a funeral is as low as you can get. Niang added “salt to the wound”. “I felt as I had been skinned alive”(Page 187). Adeline losing Ye-Ye was hard enough, without Niang making it even worse. Adeline was already doubting herself after Ye-Ye’s death. Niang hurt Adeline very deeply by saying that.
Adeline is very unimportant to her father, to a point where he forgot her name. “A Dang went through me. I meant so little to him”(Page 124). Father doesn't care about her. He showed Adeline doesn't mean much to him, and it clearly bothered Adeline. “I'm afraid I've forgotten your Chinese name”(Page 124). Father forgot his own daughter’s name. But this occurrence represents not only Father, but her own family. Father along with the rest of the family don't care much about Adeline, this is one the best
