1. The Culture I would most like to study is the Choctaw Indian culture. Many of the Native tribes have endangered languages and cultures, I think it is important to preserve all cultures, and gain understanding of ways people live in the world. The Choctaws like many other tribes engage in Stick ball, a sport that consist of using their stick to move the ball across the field to the other teams goalpost. Sports are a very important part of many cultures. Another important part of the Choctaw culture is dancing. Choctaws use dancing to honor their ancestors, tell stories, and pass traditions down to the new generations. The Choctaw Indian reservation today holds an annual fair in Choctaw, Mississippi.
2. I would say my easy going personality would contribute to my field work. I find it easy to meet new people, and I love hearing people’s stories. I don't mind traveling at all, and I would be willing to participate in various cultural activities. I am always open to new experiences, and willing to surround myself with people I have nothing in common with. I find that eventually you will come across a shared interest in something. Understanding other culture’s religions and practices can be very difficult in my opinion. A lot of people are raised to believe a certain religion growing up, so as an adult having to forget everything you believe to accept a different religion takes a lot of mental power. The Choctaws from past generations believed in supernatural spirits, good and bad. Some of the Choctaw mythology consist of shadow beings, and animal like creatures. The language would be the most difficult for me to overcome. The Choctaw alphabet is based on English characters, with different variations.
