My Personal Response to Chopin’s Stories

Surprisingly before this week I never heard of or read any of Chopin’s Stories so I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I believe her stories might have just been some basic stories without much depth to them however, that could not be further from the truth. As I read through them I started noticed her use of imagery to create this vivid image of the scenes in my mind and symbolism to add onto that and add this layer and subtle and not so subtle nuance to her stories. This is my personal response to Chopin’s stories and the insight I gleaned from said nuance.
Kate Chopin stories left me with a varied range of emotion but only two really stand out and those are unease and sadness. I really do think that when she wrote her stories she hoped she would invoke some sort of emotion in the future readers. She did a great job of this with her use of imagery and symbolism. She used a combination of noticeable symbolism and some obscure symbolism to achieve this in each of her stories. It helped foreshadow either the ending that was to come or the tone of the overall story for us to pick up on.

Each story dealt with their respective topics and in my opinion left room for interpretation for what happened after the story stopped. After it ended I was left wondering “but what happened next? Did they get caught?” or “did Desiree and her baby actually die?” “what truly killed the wife? Was it joy or sadness?”. I will never know what Chopin intended and that is why I hate the stories however, they were a good read and it left me wanting more of each story which I believe is the trademark of a good
