This program outlined the difference between white and black soldiers during the Civil War. The program started with the overview of slavery and how African Americans gained freedom. The story migrated to how blacks were treated in the army after slavery. These soldiers weren’t respected and many people thought they weren’t intelligent enough to fight. This stereotype was quickly rejected because African Americans proved to be great soldiers in the United States Union Army. 180,000 African Americans served in 163 units of the Union Army. These men were essential on the battlefield and played an important role to help the Union Army win the Civil War. In the program, there were two actors. One actor was white and one was black. In the beginning, the white man beat the black man as he captured him in Africa. The white man proceeded to sell the man. As the story evolved, and transitioned hundreds of years later; the setting migrated from Africa to America. Through the whole program the white man and black man wore the same thing. This was especially compelling when these men were soldiers. Both soldiers were wearing identical outfits, in my opinion this signified how these men were truly equal. This program identified black soldiers as sons of Ham. The black solider chanted “Sons of Ham fighting for Uncle Tom”. This program clearly intended to tell stories that people didn’t commonly hear. It is important to recognize all soldiers that have fought for our country. That is why we have Veteran’s day and Memorial Day. I really enjoyed that this program highlighted the African American unsung heroes that aren’t commonly talked about.
