A stable civilization is fragile because it can easily collapse without the presence of structured rules and order. When Ralph and Piggy discuss the topic of rescue after Jack leaves their group, Piggy explains, “ ‘Trouble is, we haven’t got enough people for a fire.’ … Ralph considered this and understood … The island was getting worse and worse” (138-139).
