Clara Barton was a very important figure in medical history. She did many things, and had many accomplishments in her lifetime. She was born on December 25th, 1821 to Stephen and Sarah Barton. Raised in Oxford, Massachusetts, she was the youngest of five children. She earned passion for teaching and nursing at a young age. Clara fell in love with nursing when she, just 11 years old, nursed her brother back from an illness. She started teaching at the age of 17 and then studied literature and languages after. In New Jersey, she opened a school and was not appointed to head the school, so she then went to Washington, D.C. While helping many different soldiers in many different battles, she was appointed Superintendent of the Union nurses
