Coach Al Ulbrickson was harsh on his Washington Husky rowing team. He made them do harsh and grueling training, no matter how bad the weather conditions were. Some say he was too hard on his boys, but others say he was caring and wanted the best for them.

In the book The Boys In The Boat, it talks about Al making them row in freezing cold Washington weather, or thunderous rain storms. These are very dangerous, but they also prepare the boys for almost any challenge they may face.

In chapter 14 of the book, Al says "Washington crews have won the highest honors in America. They have not, however, participated in the Olympic Games. That's our objective. This shows he wants the best for his rowing team, the highest standards.
