Color-blind ideology draws on “abstract, liberal notions of equality (‘equal opportunity for all’) to disconnect race from the power relations in which inequality and racial discourses are embedded.” (Rodriquez 646) It serves to “avoid” this sore spot that has been created in society when it comes to talking about race and the discrimination associated with it. However, this is not really something that Hollywood at this was did. They attempted to showcase this equal opportunity through the use of “blackface.” Actors would have their “faces ‘blacked’ up with burnt cork” (Bucholtz) As one could expect, this would not sit well within the African American community. Eminem sees meaning in the culture that they have created, and he attempts as a white man to “fit in.” He is thus portraying the ideals of colorblindness, in the sense that regardless of race anyone can make in something that another culture created. However, this is not really something that the culture itself accepts. Specifically, in the scenes where he attends the rap battles at night, he is the only white male to perform throughout all the scenes. However, this idea of colorblindness isn’t something that is represented during the entire film. The film is not appropriating black culture because of how the overall film is structed. We see that the film acknowledges rap, it acknowledges the community’s that many blacks live in, and even some of the gangs that create the overall culture. If the film had been appropriating black culture, it would not have had such a large focus on the culture overall.
