The purpose of this post is to compare and contrast community health/public health nursing practice with hospital base nursing practice in terms of core functions and essential services. Community/public health nursing is the combination of nursing practice and public health practice that focuses on health promotion and disease prevention (Nies & McEwen, 2015). Hospital based nursing care focuses on disease management and the remedy for illnesses.

In comparison, the community/public health nursing practice and hospital based nursing practice both educate on the prevention of illnesses. For example, a home health nurse can educate a vulnerable patient on the importance of getting a flu shot to prevent triggering a certain illness from the flu. When working in my facility, I educate the importance of a flu shot with patients with chronic illnesses in order to prevent complications from the flu. Community/public health nurses must communicate effectively by assessing health literacy (Nies & McEwen, 2015). Hospital based nursing does the same. Before I educate my patient, I assess their ability on how to obtain, process, and understand health information.
