Introduction An annual survey conducted in 2014 asked American workers how they feel about various aspects of their jobs, including wages, job security, promotion policy, vacation policy, sick leave, health plan, and retirement plan (Adams, 2014). The survey concluded that 52.3 percent of Americans are dissatisfied with aspects of their current jobs (Adams, 2014). Many organizations believe that there is a positive correlation between employee satisfaction and job performance, however, empirical studies have not produced conclusive evidence to prove or disprove this assertion (Davar & Ranju, 2012). Qualitative interviews will be conducted with emergency department nurses from three shifts each at John Randolph and Memorial Regional. Interviews can be conducted on site or off site, depending on the interviewee’s preference. Open ended questions will be utilized to determine if the nurses perceive their work environments differently, and if this perceived difference impacts their treatment of patients. My objective is to allow nurses to voice this correlation. I can use responses gathered in the interviews to imply a correlation between nurses' job satisfaction and treatment of patients. A nurse that had a particularly hard day at work before sitting to complete the survey may answer the questions differently than if she had a pleasant work day. There is no way for me to control the outside factors that influence the nurses' attitudes, but I can encourage the participants to complete the survey when he or she has sufficient time and energy to focus on the questions. Interviews with the nurses at John Randolph and Memorial Regional will be conducted before his or her shift begins or on a non-work day. I will do my best not to schedule the interviews at a time when a tragic incident has occurred in the hospital or any other event that may affect the emotional or mental stability of the
