The Great Depression and Dust Bowl were events which affected the economy in such a way that they left thousands of people without work and sustenance. There were very difficult times, especially for the farmers because during the Great Depression the job opportunities were extremely scarce and the Dust Bowl with its strong winds, dust storms and drought killed all the crops and livestock in the region from Texas to Nebraska. These two events combined forced hundreds of families to move from farms to the city in search of opportunities to form a new life. Upon the occurrence of this movement, the Farm Security Administration (FSA) and the Works Project Administration (WPA) built the Arvin Federal Government Camp better known as "Weedpatch"
