Comparing A Good Man And Still I Rise

For my readings, I chose to read A Good Man by Mark K. Shriver and Still I Rise by Maya Angelou. Each of these works of literature relate back to our lives here at Marywood. Although A Good Man and Still I Rise are very different, they have one thing in common. They both exemplify many of Marywood’s core values, especially respect and excellence. To begin, in the book, A Good Man, the author shows excellence. Excellence is known as a talent or quality, which is unusually good and so surpasses ordinary standards. Throughout the whole book, the narrator tries to portray his father, Sargent Shriver, as having this quality. Sargent Shriver took it upon himself to serve his country, support his family, and constantly work on improving himself by keeping his ego in check. Sarge gave 100% in whatever he did and always worked to be a better person. This is why he was looked up to in the community and died known as a good man. …show more content…
The poem is based off of her views of this woman. Synonyms of excellence are superiority, strength, and perfection. This is exactly what the poem is all about. For example, “ Just like moons and like suns, with the certainty of tides, just like hopes springing high, still I’ll rise.” (Angelou, 1978) This quote is comparing how she raises herself up emotionally like the moon and sun rise everyday.
